Bernie Doesn't Just Shake!

Art exhibition & installation

Bernie doesn’t just shake! is a 5 day exhibition showcasing those living with Parkinson’s Disease and how they can benefit from embracing a positive outlook on life.  The star of this show is the multi-talented Bernie who used his PD to reinvent himself as an abstract expressionist artist.

Where: The Garvan Institute of Medical Research
Location: 384 Victoria St, Darlinghurst NSW 2018

Art Exhibition

The Garvan Institute have converted their foyer into a showcase and generously opened up their premises to exhibit Bernie’s paintings.  In Bernie’s own words…

“my work is spontaneous, instinctive and organic. It grows with every splash or drop of paint. The thoughts that inspire initially often change as the work progresses. The application can be by great big bold strokes to small intimate marks. Every painting comprises a series of layers with each layer creating greater depth and texture.

I am always looking for different methods of application from using traditional instruments such as brushes and palette knives to water pistols and even the garden hose.”

Panel Discussion

As part of the opening evening of the exhibition we managed to bring together some fascinating people for a discussion.  This includes Neurologists specialising in Parkinson’s Disease, a well known art critic who writes for the Sydney Morning Herald, and three other individuals who have reinvented themselves after being diagnosed with PD.

The discussion should spark some interesting questions and ideas about the benefits of staying positive when living with PD.

Launch of Bernie the Dashboard Doll

We had an idea to produce something that was both fun and reminded people living with Parkinson’s as well as their loved ones to be positive. So when we brainstormed ideas about how to promote PD and provide an object that people might purchase we came up with the wobbly dashboard doll.

A Famous Horse Trainer

This event was also made possible thanks to the generous support of Ron Quinton OAM and his wonderful wife Margaret.  Ron is a Hall of Fame trainer and one of the most respected and successful figures in Australian racing.  This came after almost 30 years in the saddle.

Despite breaking too many bones over the years, Ron considers himself very lucky – I’m still able to do what I love even at my age, where as others through no fault of their own aren’t so lucky”.
